The annual summer rite of passage is here, the Summer X Games, and along with it, Dragon’s FMX rider Josh Sheehan put together a sterling performance at Day 2, grabbing the silver medal in the Freestyle Motocross competition. This marks the sixth medal for the Donnybrook, AUS native, his second in the Freestyle discipline. He previously took gold in 2016 at Summer X Games in Austin, TX.
On the second of his two runs, Sheehan was sitting in 5th place, and under pressure, the 31-year-old delivered. The started off with a Indy Air Flair on the quarterpipe, followed up by a No-handed Superman, showing his deep bag of tricks. Next came Sheehan’s version of the 360, which the announcers remarked is flatter and less flippy than most; eye pleasing, to boot. With a Knack Knack set up air, Sheehan dropped a double backflip, a trick he’s made look too easy over the years. Next up was the Backflip Double Seat Grab.
Here Sheehan pulled into uncharted territory. After the backflip he went into a Downward 360 Seat Grab, the first time he’d ever done it. He finished off the run with a statement, a Kiss of Death Flip. The judges rewarded him handsomely with the 90.66, good for 2nd place.
“[I] hadn’t done this trick before this week,” Sheehan noted afterward. “This morning actually was the first time I landed it.” He continued, “I was hoping to have done it a little bigger, but it’s a lot easier landing in a big foam pit—it’s much scarier coming in sideways towards the dirt.”
