Mick Fanning inducted into Surfers’ Hall of Fame

Dragon surfer Mick Fanning has been inducted into the prestigious Surfers’ Hall of Fame today in Huntington Beach, California. The ceremony was held outside of Huntington Surf and Sport, where Fanning was cemented, literally, into the Hall of Fame. He had his hand and foot impressions cast into the cement that will lay in Surf City forever.

“It’s a huge honor,” Fanning says of the HOF nod. “You sort of go through your surfing career, and a lot of the time, you’re focused on creating results for yourself and you don’t really look at the outside awards. But it’s a huge honor to be recognized.”

The Australian is no stranger to awards throughout his storied career. He’s been named Australia’s Male Surfer of the Year six times and was recently appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia. Additionally, Mick has captured three World Championship Tour titles—in 2007, 2009, and 2013.

“Mick has always shown the heart of a champion and [represented] surfing in the most positive way,” Aaron Pai, founder of the Surfers’ Hall of Fame said earlier. “We are honored to be able to thank Mick for his achievements and contributions to our sport.”

The Hall of Fame ceremony took place during the US Open of Surfing, one of the largest surf gatherings in the US. “I usually try and avoid Huntington because it’s so hectic [laughs],” joked Fanning. “But [this is] a very huge honor.” Mick joins Bethany Hamilton to make up the illustrious HOF class of 2017.

Fanning is in the midst of his 16th World Championship Tour season, having just finished with a 5th place at Jeffrey’s Bay in South Africa. Next he’ll be headed to Teahupo’o, Tahiti for CT #7.
