The celebration may have started last week in Mechanicsville, but Zach Osborne kept the party going at Ironman MX in Indiana to cap off an incredible season. The Dragon motocross rider finished the last race of the year with a 1-1 performance to take the overall win and cement this season as one for the ages.

“It was a really good day,” Zach succinctly said. “I finally figured out some stuff with my starts this week.”

Zach mathematically locked up the 250MX Championship last week, but the season wasn’t over. When asked if he would taken this weekend’s race easy, he explained:

“I’m not a turn it down a notch kind of guy,” Zach said to the press. “I like to send it, so I go into every weekend with the same attitude.  I’ve had to battle from a lot of bad starts this year so I haven’t had to many times where I’m able to say, ‘Let’s cruise it in for a 2nd [place] or whatever,’, it was always fighting tooth and nail for everything I could get.”

While he may have been fighting for every pass and to overcome every bad start, Zach’s points painted a different story, one of consistent domination. The Rockstar-Husky racer had overall podiums at 11 of the 12 stops this season, and finished the season 81 points ahead of the next competitor—of more than three moto’s worth.

One more notch for Zach’s belt, he locked up the Constructors’ Championship for Husqvarna in the 250 class, despite not having a 250 partner for weeks, with rookie Michael Mosiman undergoing shoulder surgery after a successful start to the season.

This concludes the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season, with Zach claiming his second championship plate of the year, the first coming in the 2017 AMA Monster Energy Supercross series that concluded in May.

Up next, Zach will take a week off, start training again, and represent the stars and stripes at the MX of Nations in England. This will be Osborne’s first time, and first time being team captain.

Osborne and Davalos hit the podium in Unadilla

In what was a muddy and rainy affair in upstate New York, the Dragon motocross riders took home a pair of podium performances as the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Outdoor Nationals took to the Unadilla MX track. 250cc points leader Zach Osborne had an uneven day but finished the day in 3rd place overall and didn’t bleed too many points. 450cc rider Martin Davalos took home his second consecutive podium, managing a 2nd place result.

A bad start and uneven race would have doomed anyone else, but Osborne put his head down and finished in 3rd place in Moto 1. “The first Moto I just couldn’t get into a rhythm,” said Osborne. “I just struggled for rhythm, I had a really good last two laps to get third, that kind of salvaged the Moto.”

Bad starts continued to plague Zach in the second Moto, as well. “Second Moto I just didn’t get a good start but I was able to make it up to fifth.”

While there aren’t any championship stakes for Martin Davalos at this point in the season, a podium finish is still a podium finish, taking 2nd overall with an 8-2 stat line. “I think I kind of was overriding a little bit, but none of us took a parade lap so we all were taking a lot of chances,” said Davalos. “I made a lot of mistakes and got behind [leader Marvin Musquin] and I did my best to keep him close, but I also did my best to not let the guys behind catch me. It was an awesome moto.”

Osborne lost 11 points in the title chase, but remains 63 points up on 2nd place Jeremy Martin, with a chance to lock up the 250cc Championship at Budds Creek, MD next weekend. Martin has climbed to 6th overall on the 450cc points list. Next week we see the circuit head to Maryland for the penultimate race of the season.
